Linden's Largest Sprinkler returns to beat the heat

LINDEN, MI -- Kids looking to beat the heat in Genesee County got a free opportunity this weekend with the return of the Linden Fire Department’s Largest Sprinkler event.

Hundreds of youth could be found on the lawn in front of the Linden Symphony, sliding down two large, blue tarps, bumping into each other as they flew over the wet surface on the afternoon of Friday, July 22.

Laughter and cries from the children overpowered the sound of artificial rain as it fell onto the field.

The water that fell down on the group was the same used to fight fires in Linden, launched from a fire engine parked nearby.

Firefighters Anthony Card and Ray Davis periodically walked through the tarp pouring dish liquid to make the surface slippery for sliding.

“We had a good group of kids this year,” Card said. “Everyone looked like they had fun.”

Card’s own sons, Noah and Aidan, participated in the event this year.

Temperatures hit 90 degrees in Linden during the hour-long event that started at 3 p.m.

Although it was hosted by the Linden Fire Department, families came from all around Genesee County to see the return of the event.

The event is held annually, but it has had a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fire Captain Harold Skinner, who has worked in the fire department for 53 years, described the crowd of kids as “a mob.”

Skinner and Linden Fire Chief Brian Will operated the hose during the event, turning it every so often to hit parents on the sidelines.

Cars that drove by the lot honked to cheer on the mob that played in the rain.

Linden resident Colleen Billington brought four of her grandchildren to enjoy the event for the first time this year.

“It was awesome,” she said. “All the kids had fun. Being such a hot day, this worked out perfect.”
