HADLEY — A voluntary water ban that recently went into effect has been replaced by a mandatory ban for all town water customers that includes prohibitions on washing vehicles and filling swimming pools.

The Department of Public Works imposed the restrictions on Friday due to ongoing high-water demands.

Among the restrictions are banning automatic sprinkler use, limiting outdoor watering to buckets, cans or a hand-held hose with automatic shutoff nozzle and implementing an odd and even watering schedule. In addition, outdoor watering can only be done between 5 and 9 a.m., and 6 and 10 p.m.

Production of food is exempt from restrictions.

Restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
