A fire in Allentown went to three alarms and left one man injured after he jumped from a window to escape the flames, officials said.

The fire on the 1500 block of Liberty Street began around 9:30 a.m. Friday and caused damage to four three-story row homes, displacing five adults and six children. The American Red Cross is assisting the families.

The injured man emerged from a second-floor window onto a porch roof and jumped about 10 feet, fire Capt. John Christopher said. He had minor injuries and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for observation, as was a firefighter who suffered a minor facial injury when he was struck in the face by an air canister being lifted off a truck.

The fire began at 1546 Liberty, which had extensive fire, smoke and water damage, Christopher said. The two houses immediately to the west had some fire and smoke damage. Firefighters checking for flames drilled holes in the walls of the house immediately to the east but determined the fire hadn’t extended to the building.

The fire marshal was starting the investigation of the cause just before noon, Christopher said.

“The bulk of the fire was knocked down in, I’d say, 45 minutes, but there was very extensive overhaul,” he added. “We had to take off a lot of siding and there was a lot of roof work.”
